Overnight lane closures are underway on Sunshine Road, Tottenham as crews start the mammoth task of relocating overhead electricity cables and laying new underground pipes as part of Melbourne Airport Rail Stage 1: West Footscray to Albion Rail Upgrade.
Melbourne Airport Rail Stage 1 will untangle 6km of tracks between West Footscray and Albion, removing bottlenecks and creating capacity for 1000 trains a day through Sunshine Station.
Since February, crews have been busy relocating utilities in and around the rail corridor, including a jet fuel pipeline, telecommunication lines and major water services.
The work along Sunshine Road will continue into 2027 as crews relocate electricity services underground between Quarry Road and Ashley Street.
To complete these works, Sunshine Road will close westbound from 7pm to 7am every night. During this time, all westbound vehicles will detour via Dempster Street, and Paramount, Somerville and Market roads.
Crews will also complete site investigations east of Ashley Street, with eastbound traffic reduced to one lane between Robert and Currajong streets from Friday 18 September to Sunday 20 September, 10pm to 7.30am each night.
Vehicle and pedestrian access to businesses and private properties will be maintained, with traffic management in place to guide road users through the area.
There will be no works or road disruptions on Saturday and Sunday nights, public holidays or during the December and January holiday period.
Melbourne Airport Rail Stage 1 includes building new rail flyovers to permanently separate metro, regional and freight trains, 2 new platforms at Sunshine Station for Geelong and Ballarat services, and new Albion and Tottenham stations.
This will create capacity for trains to Melbourne Airport, future electric trains to Melton and additional trains to Wyndham Vale.
