Preparing for new tracks at Tottenham

Crews at Tottenham are preparing to rebuild the Ashley Street rail bridge and a new Tottenham Station as part of Melbourne Airport Rail Stage 1: West Footscray to Albion Rail Albion Upgrade.

The project will untangle 6km of track between West Footscray and Albion and build 2 new platforms at Sunshine Station, transforming the station into a transport superhub with capacity for 1000 trains a day, including future trains to the airport and electric trains to Melton.

To make space for realigned Sunbury Line tracks, the new Tottenham Station will be built 20m north of its current location.

The station precinct will also include a new, wide underpass, separated from Ashley Street, with entrances on Rupert Street and Sunshine Road, and lift and stair access to the platforms.

The new underpass will allow passengers to access Tottenham Station and both sides of the rail corridor without having to use the pedestrian path on Ashley Street.

To allow crews to work safely in the area, Ashley Street will remain closed overnight between Sunshine Road and Rupert Street from 9pm to 5am until Friday 26 June.

Crews are completing assessments of the existing bridge, taking ground and soil samples and locating utilities in the rail corridor and under Ashley Street.

It follows site investigations at the Tottenham Freight Yards in May to prepare for the realignment of tracks, which will permanently separate metro, regional and freight trains at Sunshine.

Melbourne Airport Rail Stage 1 will be completed in 2030.
