Breaking down barriers for employment

Back to Newsfeed

The North East Link Project is delivering a range of employment programs focused on diversity, inclusion and skills development, ensuring there's lasting social value after the project is completed.

Through working closely with community partners, the team has developed employment pathways that provide valuable experience and transferrable skills for people who face barriers to work.

These programs have created opportunities for employees like Owen Roberts, who lives with Down syndrome and has secured rewarding, paid employment on the M80 Ring Road Completion.

Owen had the motivation and potential to succeed, and with the right environment and support, has been able to thrive in his role with the team.

Owen's parents, Julie and Paul have found the inclusion program to be a great opportunity and beneficial to his growth in the workforce.

"For him to have ongoing employment, it gives him a sense of purpose and independence."

"He's growing into the young man we wanted him to grow into, and part of that was to be independent, and he is, and to be employed. Mission accomplished."

Owen's story is a powerful reminder that when barriers are removed and opportunities are created, everyone benefits.

With a comprehensive recruitment and onboarding process, combined with tailored on-the-job training and ongoing support, the inclusion program has delivered outstanding participation and retention outcomes across the project.

With clear responsibilities, practical workplace adjustments, and tailored support, the program demonstrates how initiatives like these can help individuals not only thrive in their current roles but also build confidence and capability for the future.

This is all part of North East Link's commitment to leaving lasting positive community beyond the life of the project.
