Congratulations to Armstrong Creek School for winning the Shop to the Top competition as part of the Barwon Heads Road Upgrade and earning a $5,000 prize through the support of the local community.

A $5,000 cheque was presented to Armstrong Creek Primary School Acting Principal Lizzie Tout recently after the school was crowned the winner of the Barwon Heads Road Upgrade Shop to the Top competition.

The prize money will be used to deliver projects chosen by students, including new outdoor benches requested by Grade 2 students and new sports tops designed by Indigenous students alongside the school’s Marrung Leader and Student Voice and Agency Leading Teacher and Koorie Engagement Support Officer.

Shop to the Top is a community-based initiative to support local traders impacted by major construction works delivered as part of Big Build Roads.

During Terms 1 and 2, the local primary schools Armstrong Creek Primary School, St Catherine of Siena Catholic Primary School and Biyala Primary School took part in the competition.

Community members earned points for their chosen school by shopping at 17 participating businesses along Barwon Heads Road and at The Village Warralily Shopping Centre, with the majority of spending recorded at Armstrong Creek Fresh Fruit Market, Bakers Delight, and Direct Chemist Outlet.

Points were accumulated by uploading receipts with every dollar spent contributing one point towards a school’s total - Armstrong Creek Primary School won the competition with 156,385 points.

Delivered by the Barwon Heads Road Upgrade project team and construction partner FCC Construction, the initiative generated strong community participation and consistent engagement throughout the competition period.

Work started on Stage 2a of the Barwon Heads Road Upgrade in mid-2025 and is on track to be completed in late 2027.

Construction on Stage 2b between Lake and Lower Duneed roads is expected to start later this year.

The Project will improve journey reliability, road safety and traffic flow for around 13,700 motorists daily by delivering extra lanes, upgraded intersections and new shared walking and cycling paths between Charlemont and Armstrong Creek.

See Barwon Heads Road Upgrade for more information about the project.
