Overview
Stage 2b of the Barwon Heads Road Upgrade extends 2km from Lake Road, Armstrong Creek, to Lower Duneed Road, Connewarre.
The project will:
- add an extra lane in each direction between Lake Road and Lower Duneed Road
- install a new signalised pedestrian crossing north of Buchanan Boulevard
- upgrade the roundabout at Buchanan Boulevard to accommodate two lanes in each direction along Barwon Heads Road
- build a new shared walking and cycling path that will connect to the existing path network.
This stage builds on the benefits already delivered by Stage 1 (completed in mid 2023) and Stage 2a (due for completion in late 2027), supporting growth in Armstrong Creek and surrounding areas.
Construction of Stage 2b will begin later this year and is expected to be completed in late 2028.
Project benefits
Once completed, the upgrade will:
- improve travel reliability for around 13,700 motorists daily
- enhance road safety and traffic flow
- provide better access to public transport
- make it easier and safer for people to walk and cycle in the area.
Planning progress
In early 2025, the Australian Government announced additional funding to upgrade a further 2km of Barwon Heads Road.
Planning for Stage 2b is progressing, with detailed design and preparation works, including fencing, underway.
In the coming months, we will begin the process to appoint a contractor to deliver the works.
Community and stakeholder engagement
We will continue to keep the community informed as the project progresses and as we approach the start of construction.
