Drivers in Melbourne’s northwest are another step closer to enjoying a smoother and more reliable journey through Sunbury, with major works on the Lancefield-Sunbury intersection now complete.
The new intersection opened early thanks to construction crews working around the clock for 5 weeks through January and early February to replace the existing roundabout with temporary traffic lights.
During the closure of the Lancefield Road leg, crews:
- removed the existing road surface
- undertook extensive pavement construction works including asphalting and installing new drainage
- added guard rails and lighting
- added line marking to guide motorists through the new intersection.
Temporary traffic lights at the Lancefield Road intersection paves the way for the next stage of construction to begin, allowing traffic to flow more smoothly to and from the existing Sunbury town centre and Goonawarra during works. Permanent signals will become fully operational later in 2023.
Visibility is also being improved with the installation of upgraded street lighting, increasing safety for all road users.
Paths for cyclists and pedestrians are being built along Sunbury Road around the Lancefield Road intersection to better connect emerging communities to the town centre – part of around 8km of cycling and pedestrian paths being built across the project.
The new intersection is 1 of 3 to be upgraded on Sunbury Road between Powlett Street and Bulla-Diggers Rest/Loemans Road – with traffic lights to be added to the intersection of Francis Boulevard and at the entrance to the Sunbury Eco-Hub.
Construction of a second bridge over Jacksons Creek is also underway, due for completion in mid 2023.
As well as the intersection upgrades, drivers will benefit from an extra lane in each direction between Powlett Street and Bulla-Diggers Rest/Loemans Road, and the second bridge over the Jacksons Creek helping reduce congestion in the area.
Once complete, this vital upgrade will improve traffic flow, connect existing and emerging communities to the Sunbury town centre and accommodate for future residential and commercial growth along Sunbury Road.
The Sunbury Road Upgrade is set to be complete by 2025.
