Halfway there on Barwon Heads Road

There’s been a major shift on one of Geelong’s busiest growth corridors, with Stage 2a of the Barwon Heads Road Upgrade approaching its halfway mark, and drivers are starting to see the benefits take shape in real time.

After being closed since mid-December last year, Boundary Road between Barwon Heads and Harriott roads reopened early May, marking the first time the intersection has been fully open since major construction kicked off on the western side in mid-2025.

To keep traffic moving safely while works continue, crews installed a temporary roundabout, a short-term change that’s helping unlock long-term benefits.

Behind the scenes, crews made the most of the closure, upgrading underground drainage and lighting infrastructure, building new lanes on Barwon Heads Road and adding turning lanes on Boundary Road. It’s all part of creating smoother, safer journeys for the 35,000 motorists who use the road each day.

And the pace isn’t slowing down. A construction blitz is now underway at Parkfield Boulevard in Charlemont and Warralily Boulevard in Armstrong Creek, where crews are upgrading intersections through to late May. Once complete, traffic will move onto newly built Barwon Heads-bound lanes between Reserve and Boundary roads, and Geelong-bound lanes between Boundary and Lake roads, including across the widened Armstrong Creek bridge.

When complete, Stage 2a will deliver extra lanes, safer intersections and new shared walking and cycling paths between Charlemont and Armstrong Creek, building on the benefits already delivered in Stage 1.

And there’s more on the horizon, with Stage 2b between Lake and Lower Duneed roads expected to begin later this year.

For now, it’s full speed ahead, and another major milestone worth celebrating.
