The M80 Ring Road Completion reached another milestone on the weekend with the installation of the new Nell Street walking and cycling bridge over Greensborough Highway and the demolition of the old bridge.
The existing bridge was demolished on Saturday and the new bridge was lifted into place on Sunday with pedestrians and cyclists able to use the new crossing from Monday morning.
The new Nell Street walking and cycling bridge will deliver safer, more direct connections for the Watsonia and Greensborough communities, making it easier to travel between neighbourhoods, schools and public transport across Greensborough Highway.
The bridge components were delivered to site then assembled before being moved on a specialised transporter and lifted into place.
In a Victorian first, the bridge deck is made from 80 per cent recycled soft plastics, requiring less ongoing maintenance over its lifespan.
The new 64‑metre‑long Nell Street walking and cycling bridge is longer to allow for the extra lanes on Greensborough Road and is approximately four metres wide. The bridge features ramps with more gradual slopes, making them easier to use and meet modern accessibility standards.
The Nell Street bridge is part of 10 kilometres of upgrades to walking and cycling connections on the M80 Ring Road Completion project.
Relocating the bridge also helps enable delivery of the M80 Ring Road Completion, including building additional lanes on Greensborough Highway and express connections to the North East Link tunnel.
