Mickleham Road Upgrade – Stage 2 is on track to start early works next year, with important planning and site investigation work underway.
Melbourne’s northern communities were recently invited to have their say on plans for the project, which will reduce congestion and improve road safety, travel times and transport connections between Greenvale, Yuroke and beyond.
We're planning to upgrade Mickleham Road between Dellamore Boulevard and Craigieburn Road, delivering up to 3 lanes in each direction. New traffic lights will also be installed at Dunhelen Lane and Cookes Road, and new walking and cycling paths will be built along Mickleham Road.
Residents, road users, local groups and businesses were invited to provide feedback on the proposed use and development of the land for the project, as well as the project boundary planned for construction in June 2026.
A total of 151 submissions were received through Engage Victoria, with more than 95% of respondents supporting the upgrade. Community feedback formed part of the planning application submitted to the Minister for Planning and will continue to inform the project design.

Before major construction can begin, projects of this scale must undergo detailed design, technical assessments, planning approvals, underground utility investigations and community consultation.
As planning progresses, the project team is continuing detailed investigations including utility identification, ground condition testing, drainage and flood modelling, environmental assessments and preparation of a Cultural Heritage Management Plan.
Further construction timelines will be confirmed as planning and environmental approvals progress and once a construction partner is appointed. Early works are expected to start in early 2027.
Major construction for Stage 1 of the Mickleham Road Upgrade between Somerton Road and Dellamore Boulevard was completed in late 2024, delivering additional lanes, new traffic lights, upgraded intersections and new walking and cycling paths.
The Mickleham Road Upgrade – Stage 2 will enhance the benefits delivered by Stage 1 and the completed Craigieburn Road Upgrade, increasing capacity along a key transport corridor in Melbourne's north.
Together, these upgrades will support growing communities while making journeys safer and more reliable.
