Residents, businesses and community organisations near Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) East sites are benefitting from the Community Crew – who have completed more than 500 jobs helping manage the impacts of construction.

The team of friendly faces started work in early 2025 to offer hands-on help during construction of SRL East between Cheltenham and Box Hill. Their initial focus was on helping locals near the Clarinda, Heatherton and Clayton sites, but they have now expanded their services to help those near the Glen Waverley and Burwood sites as well.

Since then, the Crew has completed:

  • 149 car washes
  • 133 window cleans
  • 31 neighbourhood clean ups
  • 22 gardening jobs

The Community Crew has also removed graffiti, planted trees and vegetation, tidied up and maintained public areas, removed rubbish and supported local businesses.

What locals had to say

The crew of 6 is employed through Wallara, a not-for-profit organisation providing employment for people with disability. They are working full time as construction of SRL East ramps up, ahead of the start of tunnelling later this year.

Construction of SRL East is creating up to 8000 direct local jobs, with more than 3300 people already working on the project. Trains will be taking passengers in 2035.
