PLANNING

Melton Line Electrification

The Australian and Victorian governments have jointly funded $152.7 million to kick off development work for the Melton Line electrification.

This work will take place to finalise designs, scope and costs for the future delivery of the project.

It will include site investigations, environmental assessments, planning approvals, securing power supply for the future electrified line and detailed design and costing with delivery partners.

Electrification will allow more trains to run along the Melton Line, servicing the booming communities in Melbourne’s west.

In the interim, a number of projects are already underway that are preparing the Melton Line for electrification.

This includes the Melton Line Upgrade, which will feature platform extensions and building a new stabling yard at Cobblebank, to allow longer 9-car VLocity trains to run on the line in 2027, boosting capacity by 50% on peak services. The Cobblebank stabling yard will be future-proofed for electric trains, allowing trains to be at Melton Station ready for first services to the city.

A new Melton Station will open in late 2026, as part of works to remove 4 level crossings on the Melton Line. The new station will include 4 platforms, 2 dedicated to electrified metropolitan services and 2 to regional services.

The Melbourne Airport Rail Stage 1: West Footscray to Albion Rail Upgrade is enabling the Melton Line electrification by making way for new tracks and overheads and transforming Sunshine Station into a superhub, allowing more than 1000 trains to run through the station each day.

Timeline

The development work will begin this year and is expected to be completed in mid-2027.
