We’ve upgraded the M80 Ring Road between Sydney Road and Edgars Road, with all major works being completed a year ahead of schedule.
The project has transformed one of Melbourne’s busiest freeways, providing additional capacity and improving safety for more than 165,000 drivers each day.
We’ve installed a new smart freeway management system and ramp metering technology on this section of the M80. This innovative new system helps make travel times more reliable by controlling the flow of traffic on and entering the freeway. The system will also enable faster and more efficient response times to traffic incidents.
The new lanes and ramps were opened in stages between November 2021 and March 2022, allowing thousands of drivers to take advantage of the additional capacity, more than a year ahead of schedule.
With the Sydney Road to Edgars Road section of the upgrade now complete, the project will:
- provide more reliable journeys
- improve travel times
- improve safety by minimising merging
- provide better access to other freeways, interstate links, local and arterial roads and the future North East Link
- improve traffic flow
- reduce congestion during peak hours
- enhance freight efficiency for over 22,000 trucks each day
- provide better access to employment hubs.
