Murray Basin Rail Project

Siding upgrades

Completed

Siding works at Donald and Merbein enable trains and wagons to be stored when not in use. Siding works were completed at Donald in late 2022 and at Merbein in early 2023.

Project benefits

Reconstructing a 300-metre siding at Donald and extending Merbein’s siding to 1200-metre has made it possible to:

  • re-order wagons
  • hold additional wagons when loading
  • accommodate defective wagons or locomotives when required
  • stable trains or wagons off the main line

Benefits of these upgrades include:

  • improved network flexibility
  • improved trackside drainage
  • increased capacity for rail freight users
