Fiona Clarke and Kenneth McKean: Ballarat Line Upgrade stations

Rockbank, Cobblebank, Bacchus Marsh, Ballan and Wendouree stations, 2021

As part of the Ballarat Line Upgrade completed in 2021, five new and upgraded stations along the line feature artworks depicting the different seasons of the Kulin Nation.

The designs

The designs reflect the Kulin calendar, which is based on environmental events, including:

  • plant flowering and fruiting
  • animal behaviour
  • the stars
  • changing angles of the sun.
    The artists

The artworks were created by two renowned artists. Fiona Clarke, Kirrae Whurrong woman from South-West Victoria, and her husband Kenneth McKean.

The process

Each design was sandblasted into a different station forecourt. The finished works provide a unique, beautiful and prominent feature for passengers to enjoy whenever they catch the train, whilst acknowledging the Traditional Custodians of the country upon which the stations lie.
