Progress update
We’re upgrading Clyde Road in Berwick, relieving bottlenecks, improving traffic flow, and making your journey easier, safer, and more reliable.
Late 2025, crews completed the works to upgrade the Princes Freeway citybound exit ramp and Warragul-bound entry ramp at Clyde Road. To upgrade the ramps, we:
- excavated 2,800 cubic metres of soil
- installed 45m of barriers, 470m of kerb and 200m of drainage
- built a 200m retaining wall alongside the new lanes
- installed 150m of guard rail
- laid a total of 1,800 tonnes of asphalt.
We also upgraded traffic lights on both ramps, with 7 new traffic lights and about 1050m of new conduits, more than double the circumference of the MCG!
As we move into the next stage of work in early 2026, there’ll be lane closures and speed reductions in place at times on the ramps.
Further north, the intersection of Kangan Drive and Clyde Road has been a major focus for the team. Crews reopened the intersection to left in left out access on Thursday 18 December 2025. Crews worked around the clock to complete the major upgrade on the intersection. We:
- widened existing lanes
- installed new traffic signs, kerbing and traffic islands
- placed asphalt and line marking.
What’s coming up
On Monday 19 January to Wednesday 21 January 2026, we’ll close Clyde Road between Bemersyde Drive and Enterprise Avenue from 8pm to 5am each night while we move barriers and set up safe work areas. Detours will be in place via O’Shea Road, Soldiers Road, Bryn Mawr Boulevard and Princes Highway or Greaves Road, Narre Warren Road and Princes Highway, with delays of up to 15 minutes.
During works, crews will shift traffic onto the newly built lanes and begin building the new northbound lanes on Clyde Road. There’ll be significant changes to the way you travel through the area during this time until mid-2026.
We’ll also start working on the intersection of Sir Gustav Nossal Boulevard and Clyde Road, with detours will be in place via Enterprise Avenue, Intrepid Street and Venture Drive, with increased traffic along the detour.
From early February to late March, we’ll install the beams and transfloors that form the new lanes on the widened Clyde Road Overpass.
To complete works safely, the Princes Freeway at Clyde Road, and Clyde Road Overpass will be closed at times overnight between 8pm and 5am.
During these works, a 750-tonne mobile crane will lift 14 steel beams, which weigh around 45 tonnes on average and are between 30m and 46m in length.
