40km/h through construction zones saves lives The speed limit on Epping Road between Craigieburn Road East and Memorial Avenue has been changed to 40km/h while we build the upgrade, to keep you and our workers safe.
We’ve reduced the speed limit to 40km/h because even when we’re not working there are still risks associated with reduced lane widths, concrete safety barriers and deep excavations behind barriers, all of which are taking place on Epping Road.
When driving near a construction site, there may be humps and drops in the road and soft road surfaces, which may increase risks for drivers. Some of these dangers may be easy to spot during the day, but much harder at night.
Research shows that the fatality rate drops considerably when speeds are reduced from 60km/h to 40km/h. These changes on Epping Road are all about getting you and our workers home safe.
When are you implementing the new speed limits on Epping Road, from Craigieburn East to Memorial Avenue?
The speed limit was reduced to 40km/h in January 2023 when major works commenced.
What are the new speed limits along Epping Road?
The speed limit on Epping Road between Craigieburn Road East and Memorial Avenue is now at 40km/h to keep you and our workers safe while we build the upgrade.
The same speed limit will apply in areas adjacent to the project and on some side roads.
Why do you need to reduce the speed limits?
The 40 km/h speed limit around work areas is designed to keep you and our workers safe.
Research shows that the fatality rate decreases considerably when -speeds are reduced from 60km/h to 40km/h. Driving at lower speeds gives you more time to see and react to any hazard and avoid a crash.
Why are there reduced speed limits in place even when you’re not working?
Even when we’re not working, there are still risks associated with reduced lane widths, concrete safety barriers and deep excavations behind barriers, all of which are taking place on Epping Road.
Some dangers are easy to spot during the day, but much harder to see at night. Reducing the speed limit through our construction zones gives you more time to react to any hazard and avoid a crash.
How long will the new speed limits be in place?
The reduced speed limit will remain in place until the project is complete in 2025.
What will the speed limit be on Epping Road after the road project is complete?
All speed limits on Epping Road and side roads will be reinstated when the project is complete.
On the eastbound lane of Harvest Home Road (between Epping Road and Edgars Road), the speed limit will change from 50 km/h to 60 km/h to match the speed limit on the westbound lane.
