Current activities

In October 2024 our team installed 30 reinforced concrete beams over the Geelong-Melbourne railway line to create the structural form for the overpass.

The 30m beams were lifted and placed onto the bridge’s central crosshead, and north and south abutments by a 650 tonne Crawler crane.

The beams, produced locally by Westkon in Cobblebank, effectively connect the project’s northern and southern sides and provide a base on which to build the bridge’s roadway.

Since starting major works on the Overpass in January we’ve also:

  • completed our ground improvement works
  • finished all drilling and piling works for the foundation of the overpass
  • built the bridge retaining walls and centre pier with locally sourced steel from Infrabuild in Sunshine and poured 2,324 cubic metres of concrete from Holcim in Laverton
  • imported, placed and compacted 17,200 truckloads of rock and dirt to raise ground levels by about 10m
  • completed more than 144,020 working hours.

Change in traffic conditions

Rumble strips have been installed on Alfred Road to encourage vehicles to slow down as they approach the intersection of Alfred and Browns roads.

The 40km/h speed limit will remain in place around our work area while we build the overpass, to keep you and our workers safe.

This includes sections on:

  • Bulban Road
  • Galvin Road
  • Browns Road
  • Alfred Road.

With 3 different points of access for trucks and vehicles entering or exiting the site, it’s important to slow down and observe the traffic signs.
