What’s been happening
Extension
We’ve been working with Wyndham City Council to develop the project design and construction plans for the new road.
Early works are underway, including setting up our site areas, installing fencing and locating any underground services in the project area.
Council is working near Gilded Road to locate cultural items to be protected and relocated to an appropriate area after construction.
Overpass
In a major milestone, we installed 30 reinforced concrete beams over the Geelong-Melbourne railway line in October 2024 to create the structural form for the overpass.
In late 2024, we poured the concrete deck for the bridge and placed the first layer of asphalt in January 2025.
We’ve also installed drainage, laid kerb, and poured concrete for the walking and cycling paths along the road and underneath the overpass.
Upcoming works
In February, we’ll continue to lay asphalt on the overpass as well as build the walking and cycling paths along and under the overpass, install street lighting and start landscaping. We’ll also survey and do further investigations along the extension site in preparation for earthworks.
In March, we’ll ramp up major works on the extension. We’ll start excavating and placing dirt in the project area between Browns and Wests roads to build the foundations for the new road.
There will be no road closures or impacts on traffic during this time.
Managing construction impacts
Residents near the project area may notice diggers, trucks and other construction vehicles moving around the site, as well as some additional dust, vibration and noise.
We’ll use dust monitors to keep an eye on dust levels in the surrounding area and will regularly spray the site with water, especially on hot and windy days during summer.
We will continue working during our normal working hours from Monday to Friday, between 7am and 6pm and on Saturday between 7am and 1pm.
Beaming over the line
In October 2024, we worked around the clock for 10 days to install reinforced concrete beams over the Geelong-Melbourne railway line to create the structural form for the overpass.
During this time, 30 beams each measuring 30 metres long were lifted and placed onto the bridge supports by a 650 tonne crane.
The beams, produced locally in Cobblebank in Melbourne’s west, connect the project’s northern and southern sides and provide the base for the road over the railway line.
We have built the overpass with enough space underneath for new future rail lines to cater for the area’s growing transport and freight infrastructure needs.
