Major works are starting
From Tuesday 14 April, we’ll start major works to upgrade the intersection at Northern Highway/High Street and Watson Street.
To give us room to build the upgrade, we’ll temporarily reduce the number of lanes on each approach to the intersection and install concrete barriers and new line marking to create a safe work area, while keeping traffic moving through the intersection as we work.
Once the barriers are in place, we’ll start major works from Tuesday 14 April until mid-2026 along Northern Highway/High Street and Watson Street. These works will include:
- relocating or protecting utilities, like power, drainage and telecommunications
- building sections of the new northbound lane on Northern Highway
- installing new street lighting
- building walking and cycling paths.
We’ll provide further information about the next stage of works in mid-2026.
Current and upcoming works
From Wednesday 8 April to Monday 13 April, we’ll work overnight from 7pm to 5:30am to install safety barriers and signage, complete line marking and adjust traffic lanes.
From 5:30am, Friday 10 April, traffic will move through a new layout with fewer lanes through the intersection to allow a dedicated work area to be set up on the western side of the Northern Highway. All movements will be available at the intersection, except the right turn from Northern Highway/High Street into Watson Street when travelling south.
Delays of up to 5 minutes are expected during these works.
Until mid-year, other temporary changes around the intersection include:
- reduced speed limits to 40km/h on Northern Highway/High Street and Watson Street near the intersection, and on Wellington Street near Watson Street
- short-term parking closures along Watson Street
- temporary overnight closures of the Northern Highway/High Street service lane at times.
We’ll keep access to homes, shops and emergency services during these works.
Pedestrian and cyclist access will be maintained, with signed detours in place where needed.
Works are weather dependent. If we need to reschedule, we’ll keep you updated via our on-road signage or view disruptions.
