What’s coming up

The final stage of works on the Princes Highway East Upgrade between Traralgon and Sale are well underway.

In the coming months, we’ll carry out a series of staged traffic switches where traffic will be moved onto newly built sections of the highway and continue works to the widened highway.

When the project is complete, this final stage of the upgrade will make journeys between Traralgon and Sale quicker and safer by increasing road capacity and providing a consistent 2-lane highway in both directions.

Upcoming works at Velore, Settlement and Sale-Toongabbie roads

Until mid May, we’ll work from 7am to 6pm on weekdays, and from 7am to 5pm on Saturdays at theintersections of Velore, Settlement and Sale-Toongabbie roads.

This work will include kerb construction, asphalting, line marking and road maintenance.

To complete this work safely, speed reductions, temporary road and lane closures will be in place.

We’ll also have increased traffic management and on-road signage to guide drivers safely through our works.

Please drive safely and allow an extra 10 minutes of travel time.

Residents located close to our works may experience an increase in noise and vibration from our construction machinery. We’ll monitor noise and vibration while we work to ensure we don’t exceed acceptable levels.

Access for emergency services to residential properties and access to the Kilmany Resource Recovery Centre and Landfill will be maintained at all times.

What’s been happening

March milestones

In late March, we switched:

  • Melbourne-bound traffic onto the newly built Princes Highway lanes east of Velore Road
  • all traffic onto the newly built Princes Highway lanes that run under the Kilmany rail bridge.

We’ll also removed detours and open all legs of the new Velore Road intersection, providing dedicated turning lanes for motorists to access the Kilmany service road, Kilmany Township and Kilmany Transfer Station.

Major bridge works complete

The new 95-metre steel arch bridge has been moved 27 metres into its new home on the Gippsland rail line, with trains returning to service on Tuesday 25 July 2023.

During the rail closure:

  • there was an average of 50 specialist workers onsite each day
  • 76 steel bridge hangers were installed and tensioned
  • the 3,200-tonne bridge was slid 27 metres into its final position
  • over 2,200m³ of concrete was poured to build the bridge
  • over 18,000 tonnes of material were excavated from the existing rail line
  • temporary towers and structures supporting the bridge were removed.

Thank you to commuters and nearby residents for your patience and support while crews worked to install the new bridge, which is set to become a local icon for the region.

Bus turnaround

As part of the project, we’ve relocated the school bus stop in Kilmany to a safer location next to the Kilmany Town Hall. To accommodate this new bus stop, we’ve constructed a new bus turnaround area which includes an upgraded bus shelter and fencing.

Construction of the area is now complete and is anticipated to be in full use by mid 2024.
