About

We've built new kerbside bike lanes that separate drivers and cyclists to make St Kilda Road safer.

The new bike lanes

Watch the video below to show how cyclists use the intersections with new separated bike lanes in place.

Sections of the new bike lanes from Linlithgow Avenue to Dorcas Street, and Toorak Road to St Kilda Junction are now open, creating safer travel on St Kilda Road. Works on the remaining sections will continue until the Metro Tunnel Project is complete in 2025.

Sustainable design and construction

Cycling is one of the most sustainable forms of transport on the planet. The new protected bike lanes on St Kilda Road were built using recycled products and will encourage more people to take up cycling, thereby reducing vehicle emissions and our carbon footprint.

Recycled materials

We’ve installed lane separators on St Kilda Road. These lanes separators provide a physical barrier to keep cyclists safe.

The separators were made using 80% recycled glass diverted from landfill, and 10% calcium carbonate manufactured at carbon neutral facilities. The separators were custom built to closely match the colour and look of the existing bluestone kerbing, which is a key feature of St Kilda Road.

We also:

  • minimised the amount of traditional concrete products we used and considered other concrete mixes that further decrease greenhouse gas emissions
  • used Recycled Aggregate Product, which includes materials from construction and demolition waste, such as crushed rock, concrete, sand, plastic, steel and brick to build new sections of footpath and reduced the amount of unused material being sent to landfill
  • worked with signage and printing companies that are committed to using recycled materials and make products that are recyclable to reduce the impact on the environment, where possible.

Recycled First Policy

We used sustainable products in line with the Victorian Government’s Recycled First Policy. This is an initiative that encourages the use of recycled materials in preference to raw materials, to drive greater use of such materials, encourage innovation and develop a new viable market for materials that would otherwise have been diverted to landfill.
