Tunnelling for SRL East uses tunnel boring machines (TBMs), which are delivered in parts and assembled on site.

These machines excavate underground to create space for the new rail tunnels while installing concrete lining as they go. This method allows us to dig, support the ground and build the tunnel all at once. We reduce noise and disruption at the surface using measures such as acoustic sheds and vibration monitoring.
