It’s lights on as the West Gate Tunnel Project kicks off a comprehensive testing program for the distinctive orange poles installed along the ramp connecting CityLink to the elevated Footscray Road.
As part of project commission works, lighting tests are currently being conducted on both the northern and southern rows of lighting - 71 on the southern side and 61 on the northern side.
This new ramp will connect to the West Gate Tunnel and provide an alternative way for people to travel from the northern suburbs to western suburbs rather than using the West Gate Bridge.
The orange poles are a key urban design feature of the project, ranging up to 14 metres in height and topped with integrated, vertical glowing lights.
Once these tests are done to ensure all electrical connections are functioning correctly, the lit-up poles serve as a pathway to the tunnels, acting as visual cues for travelers.
The orange poles will mark the eastern end of the West Gate Tunnel Project in Footscray, with corresponding orange poles situated at the M80 Ring Road interchange. These poles act as ‘bookends’ to the Project.
The orange poles are just a glimpse of the lights shining bright across the project, with Footscray Road turning a shade of green at night under the elevated road and the nighttime lights being turned on across the pedestrian and cycling bridges over the West Gate Freeway and Footscray Road near Docklands.
