What’s new?

By the end of 2025, the West Gate Tunnel Project will have delivered more than 14km of new and upgraded bike paths, including:

missing links in the Federation Trail and Kororoit Creek Trail
a new elevated veloway (cycling superhighway) over Footscray Road, for a safe express route to and from the city
improved connections to popular trails
new paths over and under the West Gate Freeway
new off-road paths and bridges.

What's the veloway?

The veloway, opening by end 2025, is a 2.5km dedicated cycling path built above Footscray Road, West Melbourne. It gives cyclists an express connection to and from the city.

Using the veloway will avoid 6 busy intersections along Footscray Road.

Cyclists can choose to use either the veloway or the existing Footscray Road walking and cycling path at ground level. Pedestrians can continue to use existing paths.

Enter the veloway from either just near Shepherd Bridge over the Maribyrnong River in Footscray or from the city side of Moonee Ponds Creek.

How is the veloway designed to keep cyclists safe?

The veloway is designed with safety and comfort in mind. A mesh covering lets in light and air, and stops objects from Footscray Road falling onto cyclists.

LED lighting runs throughout the veloway and security cameras improve safety.

Should an incident occur inside the veloway, the veloway is wide enough for emergency vehicles to enter if needed.

As an additional safety measure, cyclists can use one of the 2 emergency exits or take the stairs to ground level at one of 2 emergency access points.
