Discovery Day offers fun and interactive ways for people of all abilities and ages to walk, run and explore parts of the West Gate Tunnel before it opens to traffic.
What to expect in your area
We expect the event to attract more than 50,000 community members over the whole day from morning to evening. There could be up to 15,000 people in the area at peak times.
To ensure the safety of everyone in the area during this event, there will be some temporary changes in the area from Friday, 14 November.
You may notice:
- Workers and vehicles.
- Installation of event infrastructure and changes to traffic.
- Larger crowds of event participants.
- Increased noise from the event proceedings
- Closure of Yarraville Gardens car park from Friday 14 November until Monday 17 November.
- Temporary restrictions in and around Yarraville Gardens.
Traffic changes
There will be temporary traffic changes to the following roads starting from 8pm Saturday 15 November until 8pm Sunday 16 November.
- Whitehall Street closed in both directions.
- Somerville Road closed in both directions between Whitehall and Hyde streets.
- Hyde Street closed to traffic between Somerville Road and Lyons Street; normal bus routes will still be in operation.
- Harris Street closed to traffic with no car parking available.
- Local traffic only on Cowper Street, with lane closures and traffic management in place to restrict parking and manage local access.
- Local traffic only restrictions on all roads between Bellair Avenue, Somerville Road, Hyde Street, Nicholson Street, and Bristow Street.
- Reduced speeds, detours and traffic controllers on site to guide cars and pedestrians safely through the area.
Message boards and signage will advise road closure dates in advance and detours will be clearly sign posted
Access to properties will be maintained, any access requirements will be discussed directly with residents and businesses.
