The West Gate Freeway is one of Melbourne’s busiest roads, used by more than 200,000 vehicles a day.
Right now, the West Gate Bridge is at capacity. Just one incident can bring traffic to a standstill.
When the tunnel opens by end 2025, it will ease congestion on the West Gate Freeway and West Gate Bridge.
It will also reduce the number of trucks on local streets by providing more direct links to the port.
