A new walking and cycling bridge over Footscray Road is now open, making travel to the city easier and safer.

Suspended from two green pylons by a series of cables and already a landmark feature in the Docklands area, the 220-metre long pedestrian and cyclist bridge takes riders and users diagonally over the 8-lane Footscray Road, Docklands.

The new bridge allows users to avoid the busy Footscray Road intersection directly below and makes it easier and safer for people walking and cycling to and from the Capital City Trail, and onwards to the CBD.

With the opening of this bridge, it’s a milestone towards transforming the Footscray Road corridor, with the bridge forming a critical part of a bike connection to the 2.5-kilometre veloway - delivering the ultimate cycling express connection to and from the city once completed.

This new addition is part of the more than 14km of new and upgraded paths being delivered by the West Gate Tunnel Project to make it safer and easier for users. Previously delivered new infrastructure in the area include the two new walking and cycling bridges over Moonee Ponds Creek at Footscray and Dynon Roads in late 2024.

Future walking and cycling paths

Crews are continuing construction and upgrading works to the walking and cycling path network. Some of these works include:

  • resurfacing the current on ground Footscray Road walking and cycling path, West Melbourne
  • building a new BMX track in the CityLink area
  • Completing finishing works at the Dynon Road walking and cycling bridge over the train lines.
