We're getting ready to open the West Gate Tunnel, which will change the way people move around Melbourne and Victoria.
For North and West Melbourne, new journey choices will be opened up including easier travel to Geelong and Ballarat via new ramps at Dynon Road that connect to the West Gate Tunnel.
Wurundjeri Way has been extended from Dudley Street in North Melbourne to Dynon Road in West Melbourne, creating a new city bypass.
What's changing locally?
There will be changes to the way traffic moves around North and West Melbourne once the West Gate Tunnel opens later this year.
Local roads through North and West Melbourne will see an increase in vehicles including Hawke Street, Curzon Street, Victoria Street and Arden Street.
With the opening of any new road, we recognise it can take some time for traffic volumes and movement patterns to settle.
We will be monitoring traffic on the road network for up to two years after the West Gate Tunnel Project opens.
New ways to get around and parks to enjoy
- New and safer walking and cycling path connections.
- Improved access tot eh Surf Coast and Ballarat.
- Land along Moonee Ponds Creek transofrmed for community use and revegetated with native and Indigenous plants.
Responding to local changes
In preparation for the West Gate Tunnel opening, the Victorian Government in partnership with the City of Melbourne is investing up to $100 million into the Transport Amenity Program. From September, interim work will begin at intersections around Spencer, Dryburgh, Abbotsford, Victoria, Curzon, Rosslyn, Adderley, Lothian and Ireland streets in North and West Melbourne to improve traffic flow and discourage drivers from using local streets as shortcuts.
Once West Gate Tunnel opens, there will be real-time monitoring to ensure local traffic flow, safety and ongoing amenity is managed for the North and West Melbourne community.
For more information about these works and other projects being delivered by the Transport Amenity Program, visit transport.vic.gov.au/transport-amenity-program
Managing traffic into the city
When completed, the West Gate Tunnel will be tolled. Cars, motorbikes, and light commercial vehicles using the city exits on Monday - Friday between 7am and 9am will pay an additional toll. This toll is designed to help manage congestion into West Melbourne, North Melbourne and the CBD during the busiest time of day.
Out and about in the community
We will be out in the community over the coming months helping people learn more abouthow the West Gate Tunnel Project will change the way people move around Melbourne.
