The West Gate Freeway widened from 8 to 12 lanes , including express lanes between the M80 Ring Road interchange and the West Gate Bridge, reudcing weaving and merging that leads to traffic congestion.

Plan your drive
Travelling towards the city
You need to decide on the M80 Ring Road or Princes Freeway if you want to take the West Gate Tunnel or West Gate Bridge.
West Gate Tunnel
Stay in the left lanes and enter the tunnel near Williamstown Road, just before the West Gate Bridge.
Choose your exit
Once you leave the tunnel you will need to choose your exit.
Follow signs to either:
- CityLink
- Dynon Road in West Melbourne Wurundjeri Way or Footscray Road in Docklands
CityLink
Take the new ramp that connects the West Gate Tunnel and CityLink to go to Melbourne and Essendon airports, and the northern suburbs.
Dynon Road
Exit here for North and West Melbourne, including the University of Melbourne, major hospitals, and the Queen Victoria Market.
Footscray Road
Exit here for Docklands or the southern part of the city.
Wurundjeri Way
Exit here for Marvel Stadium, and the Flinders Street and Southern Cross station.
West Gate Bridge
Stay in the right lanes and travel express over the West Gate Bridge. Travelling via the West Gate Bridge remains a free journey.
Choose your destination
- Continue onto the south eastern suburbs
- Travel to the city via Montague Street or Power Street
Travelling outbound towards Ballarat and Geelong
You can take the West Gate Tunnel or the West Gate Bridge.
Choosing your starting point
CityLink
Follow the signs for M4 West Gate Tunnel and take the exit ramp from CityLink to the tunnel. This journey is an option if you want to travel from Coburg, Flemington or the inner north-west to places like Werribee, Geelong or the Surf Coast.
City or Docklands
Follow the signs for M4 West Gate Tunnel when coming from Footscray Road or Wurundjeri Way in Docklands, or Dynon Road in North Melbourne and travelling towards the west.
From Hyde Street
You can also use Hyde Street in Yarraville or Douglas Parade in Spotswood to get onto the West Gate Freeway – follow the signsfor M1 Geelong.
Coming from south-east suburbs
You can continue to travel from thesouth-east suburbs towards Geelongand Ballarat via the West Gate Bridge.

Travelling from the West Gate Bridge
Choose your lane early
Once you’re over the bridge, take the right-hand express lanes and follow the signs for M1 Geelong or M80 Ring Road.
Once you pass Millers Road, you’ll need to stay in:
Exiting the freeway
Get into the left lanes at the bridge and follow the signs to exit the freeway at Williamstown Road, Millers Road or Grieve Parade.
Travelling from the West Gate Tunnel
Choose your lane early
- Left lanes towards M1 Princes Freeway (Geelong)
- Right lanes towards M80 Ring Road (Ballarat/Bendigo)
Tolls and your trip
