The West Gate Tunnel is a new road that provides an alternative to the West Gate Bridge. You'll be able to use it to travel from Melbourne’s west to the city and back again.
It’s made up of:
The West Gate Freeway is one of Melbourne’s busiest roads, used by more than 200,000 vehicles a day.
Right now, the West Gate Bridge is at capacity. Just one incident can bring traffic to a standstill.
When the tunnel opens by end 2025, it will ease congestion on the West Gate Freeway and West Gate Bridge.
It will also reduce the number of trucks on local streets by providing more direct links to the port.
Drivers heading towards the city will enter the tunnel from the West Gate Freeway just before Williamstown Road and exit near the Maribyrnong River in Yarraville.
Drivers heading west will enter the tunnel near the Maribyrnong River and exit at the West Gate Freeway just east of Millers Road, South Kingsville.
The West Gate Bridge and West Gate Freeway will remain free for motorcycles, cars and light commercial vehicles to travel between the west and the south eastern suburbs.
Trucks will pay a toll to use the upgraded West Gate Freeway.
All vehicles will pay a toll for using the:
Visit the Transurban website for more information on toll points and pricing.
There will be 24-hour truck bans to ensure trucks use the West Gate Freeway and to prevent rat runs through local streets.
Roads that will have 24-hour truck bans include:
If you're travelling to the city, you'll need to decide early between the West Gate Tunnel (tolled for all vehicles) or the West Gate Bridge.
Look for signs and get into your lane before the M80 Ring Road interchange.
You’ll have a choice between a tolled or untolled route.
You can continue to use the West Gate Bridge for travel from the city to the west just as you do now.
When the West Gate Tunnel opens by end 2025, someone driving from the west to Melbourne during peak hour will save up to 20 minutes a day.
The veloway, opening by end 2025, is a 2.5km dedicated cycling path built above Footscray Road, West Melbourne. It gives cyclists an express connection to and from the city.
Using the veloway will avoid 6 busy intersections along Footscray Road.
Cyclists can choose to use either the veloway or the existing Footscray Road walking and cycling path at ground level. Pedestrians can continue to use existing paths.
Enter the veloway from either just near Shepherd Bridge over the Maribyrnong River in Footscray or from the city side of Moonee Ponds Creek.
The veloway is designed with safety and comfort in mind. A mesh covering lets in light and air, and stops objects from Footscray Road falling onto cyclists.
LED lighting runs throughout the veloway and security cameras improve safety.
Should an incident occur inside the veloway, the veloway is wide enough for emergency vehicles to enter if needed.
As an additional safety measure, cyclists can use one of the 2 emergency exits or take the stairs to ground level at one of 2 emergency access points.
