Preparations for the West Gate Tunnel opening next month are shifting up a gear, with all asphalting and line-marking now complete inside the twin tunnels.

This marks a major milestone - from heavy construction to getting the tunnels ready to open and deliver this vital alternative to the West Gate Bridge.

Crews have finished installing the last layer of asphalt (approximately 15,000 tonnes) across both tunnels.

Tunnel asphalting works began in August from the entrance near Williamstown Road, with crews completing the 2.8-kilometre citybound tunnel first, before making the return asphalting journey over the last month for the 4-kilometre outbound tunnel.

Crews are now continuing the extensive testing and trial operations of tunnel safety systems, lights, traffic management systems and ventilation fans.

Above ground crews recently completed lifting into place more than 1,700 architectural cladding panels to the steel frame wrapped around the tunnel entry and exit structure, as work continues on nearby new green space and a walking and cycling path over Whitehall Street - all designed to boost local access and community connection.

Using the new West Gate tunnels

Once complete, the project will transform travel across the western suburbs, removing thousands of trucks from local roads and delivering faster, more reliable journeys for hundreds of thousands of drivers every day to CityLink, the Port and the CBD.
