We've removed the dangerous and congested level crossing at Webb Street, Narre Warren by building a new elevated rail bridge.

The Webb Street boom gates were down for up to 33% of the morning peak, causing delays for 13,200 vehicles every day.

We've now completed the new rail bridge over Webb Street after installing giant concrete beams, a steel bridge section over Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road and new rail tracks.

In the coming months we'll continue work to build the new elevated Narre Warren Station. Trains will run express through Narre Warren until the new station opens in late March 2024.

The new station will feature two accessible elevated platforms, an air-conditioned waiting room and kiosk, secure bike storage, a landscaped forecourt with seating, and improved pedestrian connections to Narre Warren Village.

Build big at Webb Street

Underground foundations

We used piling rigs to drill more than 110 holes up to 25 metres deep, and reinforced them with steel and concrete to form the foundations of the new rail bridge.

T-beams in place for the station platforms

We lifted in 12 Super T-beams that will make up the new Narre Warren Station platforms. Each beam is up to 27M long, and weighs a whopping 70 tonnes – about as heavy as 2 humpback whales!

Connecting the rail bridge over Webb Street

We lifted in 64 concrete L-beams to support the tracks on the new rail bridge. The L-beams over Webb Street weigh 128 tonnes each and are 31m long.

Retaining walls

290m of retaining walls, made up of 270 concrete panels, have been installed to support the rail bridge as it moves back down to ground level.

Steel bridge over Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road

We've installed a 50m steel bridge section over Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road, alongside the existing bridge. The existing bridge will remain in place to provide important maintenance access to the rail track.

Changes to the way you travel

So we can safely build the new Narre Warren Station, trains will run express through Narre Warren Station over the new rail bridge. Narre Warren Station will remain closed until late March 2024. A shuttle bus service will transport passengers between Narre Warren Station and Hallam and Berwick stations during this time. For more information, please visit the PTV website.

Crane trials low-carbon fuel

We're committed to promoting sustainability and using energy, water and material saving initiatives on our projects.

As part of trialling ways to reduce carbon emissions, we used a sustainable ‘green’ fuel made from vegetable oil to power a small crane.

This diesel alternative can reduce emissions by up to ninety percent. Data from the trial will go towards understanding and promoting renewable fuel options in construction.

The new station precinct will include:

• an air-conditioned waiting room
• security cameras and improved lighting
• landscaped forecourt
• secure bike storage
• new signalised pedestrian crossing on Webb Street.

Works continue on the Pakenham Line

We're making the Pakenham Line level crossing free by 2025.

We're continuing to build a 2.5km rail bridge in Pakenham to remove the level crossings at McGregor Road, Main Street and Racecourse Road. The new Pakenham and East Pakenham stations and community spaces will be open in 2024.

Construction to remove the level crossing at Brunt Road, Beaconsfield and build a new road bridge is well underway. Major works to remove the level crossing at Station Street, Beaconsfield have started, and construction of the new road bridge will be completed by 2025.

We'll also remove the level crossing at Progress Street in Dandenong South, with a new road bridge connecting Progress Street and Fowler Road, and close the level crossing at Station Street, Officer.
