A major milestone has been reached on the Melton Level Crossing Removal Project, with the first beam lifted into place for the new rail bridges that will see the dangerous and congested level crossings at Exford and Coburns roads gone for good.
The Exford Road rail bridge is being built using 44 massive L-beams, each arriving over night from a pre-cast facility in Kilmore. Two L-beams are placed on the 20 concrete piers and crossheads to form a U-trough.
At Coburns Road the rail bridge will include a 42.5m long steel span which will be assembled on site using components transported from Tasmania.
Across both sites, more than 2000 cubic metres of concrete have already been poured, with 234 precast L-walls and 2 steel bridges forming part of the extensive works.
At the new Melton Station, 8 Super-T beams – each up to 32m long – and 24 planks will support 4 new platforms and track infrastructure. Read our fact sheet to find out more about how we’ll build the rail bridges and new station.
The final beams of the rail bridges are expected to be put into place in spring.
As well as building a new Melton Station and removing the level crossings at Coburns and Exford roads, the boom gates at Ferris Road, Melton and Hopkins Road, Truganina will be gone for good in 2026 – 2 years ahead of schedule.
Removing these level crossings will make journeys safer and travel times more reliable.
