Major works are underway to remove the Warrigal Road, Mentone and Parkers Road, Parkdale level crossings and build a new Parkdale Station. As part of these works, we will be demolishing Parkdale Station, including the platforms, as well as removing the tracks and overheads so we can get on with works safely and keep the Frankston Line running during construction.
The original station opened in September 1919 and like the suburb itself was named after an early landowner, William Parker, with substantial land holdings in the area. The station has been a cornerstone of the community through the past 100 years.
Sadly, due to the extent of damage from a fire in April 2023, we are unable to repurpose the existing Parkdale Station building as we originally planned. It will be demolished in late October.
With the new station set to open next year, we will celebrate the old station and history of the area by the installing an image viewer, or stereoscopic box, offering community members a peek into Parkdale Station’s history.
Stereoscopic photography is when 2 2D images are brought together and slightly offset at different angles to create a single 3D picture. The stereoscopic box will be lit from within and fixed to the ground to ensure the images can be enjoyed by locals through the years. We’ve installed similar boxes at Chelsea Station as part of level crossing removal works in 2021.
Passengers will be able to catch the train from a new modern Parkdale Station with more accessible facilities in mid 2024. The area will be transformed to include a village green, with seating and landscaping to create more open space for locals to enjoy.
Parkdale Station will close from 11.30pm Saturday 21 October and buses will replace trains on sections of the Frankston Line, so we can safely demolish the station and get the temporary rail track ready for trains. Parkdale Station will remain closed until the new station opens in 2024.
Trains will run express through Parkdale Station during this time. A shuttle bus will run between Mentone, Parkdale and Mordialloc stations from Saturday 4 November to mid 2024 to connect you to trains. There will be additional stops along Como Parade East and Como Parade West in Parkdale and Mentone to help locals move around the area and access each side of the rail line while we continue our works.

The Frankston Line will be level crossing-free by 2029 with all 27 dangerous and congested crossings gone for good, and 17 new stations built, changing the way locals live, work and travel.
