The Melton community has come together to celebrate the new Ferris Road bridge, which opened to traffic in July, boosting safety and easing congestion in the area.
More than 500 locals gathered for the free event on Sunday, enjoying family-friendly activities such as face painting, Lego building and children's electric car rides, and a range of cuisines, including Indian, Vietnamese, Dutch pancakes, and toasties.
Works will continue in the area over the coming months to complete lighting and landscaping, including building the resting space next to the new road bridge, designed in conjunction with the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation Elders.
The space will offer seating, native planting and motifs etched into the ground representing Gurborra, wurun, tarnuk, and baan (water).
Melton locals now also have improved transport options with the opening of the new elevated Melton Station, which opened to passengers on Tuesday 1 September, with trains now running on 2 new rail bridges over Exford and Coburns roads.
