Final designs for Melton level crossing removals

Works to build a new Melton Station and remove 4 level crossings in Melbourne’s west are a step closer, with final designs released this week and construction set to begin later this year.

In Melton, new rail bridges will take trains over Coburns and Exford roads, and road bridges will be built over Ferris Road, Melton and Hopkins Road in Truganina. This project will make Melton level crossing free in 2026 – 2 years ahead of schedule.

The new Melton Station will be built with 4 platforms to cater for one of the fastest-growing communities in Australia, paving the way for future improvements and increased capacity on the line.

The final designs were informed by community feedback from more than 850 submissions earlier this year.

The team heard the community was keen to see the 4 level crossings gone and wanted better connections and improved access for pedestrians and cyclists moving around the area.

Both road bridges at Ferris and Hopkins roads will have dedicated shared use paths to make journeys easier and safer for all commuters.

Locals also said they wanted to see improved passenger facilities at the new Melton Station, with a design that prioritised safety and landscaped areas featuring a range of native and indigenous plants, trees and grasses.

The new station will be accessible from both sides of the rail line with an expansive pedestrian walkway, pick-up and drop-off zones and each platform accessible via 2 lifts and stairs. The station will also include a new air-conditioned waiting room and staffed ticket office, along with lighting and security cameras throughout the surrounding area.

These major transport upgrades will make moving around Melbourne’s west easier for locals, with the 73,000 vehicles that use these level crossings every day no longer held up by boom gates, which can be down for almost 30 minutes during the morning peak.

Contracts for the works were recently awarded and site establishment works are set to kick off in the coming weeks, with construction scheduled to begin later this year.
