Trains have returned to the Frankston Line following 2 weeks of major works as part of the Parkdale level crossing removal project.
During this time, crews completed the 1.8km temporary track that will keep Frankston Line trains running while we remove the dangerous and congested level crossings at Warrigal Road, Mentone and Parkers Road, Parkdale and build a new Parkdale Station.
Made up of 4800 sleepers, 12,000 tonnes of ballast and 6.5km of rail, trains will run on the temporary track until mid 2024 while we get on with works.
With both sets of boom gates relocated to line up with the temporary track, locals can continue to safely use Warrigal Road and Parkers Road throughout construction.
The community also recently bid farewell to the old Parkdale Station and witnessed the last trains leaving the station ahead of its closure so we can get on with major works.
Parkdale Station will remain closed until mid 2024 when we open the new station and trains start running on the new rail bridge.
Throughout this time, a shuttle bus service will travel between Mentone and Mordialloc stations, connecting Parkdale Station passengers to the Frankston Line.
With trains now operating on the temporary track, we will:
- lay the foundations for the rail bridge by installing concrete columns in the ground, commonly known as piling
- create large gravel paved areas, known as hard stands, to safely store the heavy machinery we will use to build the rail bridge
- pour concrete to form the bridge piers, which are the concrete columns that will support the rail bridge across the roads and open space.
The level crossings will be gone for good and the new Parkdale Station opens in 2024, with the project fully completed in 2025.
