Crews are gearing up to work around the clock to remove the Coburns and Exford roads level crossings and open the new Melton Station in Melbourne’s booming west, with a construction blitz set to begin on Tuesday evening, 11 August.
A team of more than 750 workers will hit the tracks for three weeks to finish building the new elevated Melton Station and rail bridges over Coburns and Exford roads, with buses replacing trains on sections of the Ballarat, Ararat and Maryborough lines from Wednesday 12 August to Monday 31 August.
Exford Road will be closed to vehicles between Staughton Street and Brooklyn Road from 7pm, Tuesday 11 August until 7am, Monday 31 August as crews dismantle the boom gates, crane in giant concrete beams over the road, and lower and resurface the road under the rail bridge.
At nearby Rockbank and Cobblebank stations, workers will extend platforms and complete track work while trains are not running.
At Rockbank Station, up to 70 car spaces will be temporarily closed as work is carried out. When trains return to the Melton Line on Tuesday 1 September, up to 70 temporary parking spaces will open west of the existing car park. These spaces will be available until the end of the year.
After the boom gate free Exford Road reopens, Coburns Road will temporarily close at the level crossing from 1am, Sunday 6 September to 7am, Thursday 24 September to reconstruct the road and footpath.

When the new Melton Station opens on Tuesday 1 September, passengers will use a modern station featuring 2 entrances, with lift and stair access via a 16m wide through link. The through link will also provide the community with a safe way to cross the rail line.
Customer service and toilet facilities will remain at the temporary station while work continues across the station precinct.
The new station has been future proofed for electrification of the Melton Line, enabling Metro services to use 2 of the platforms in the future and electric trains to be housed at the Cobblebank stabling yard being built east of the station.
Finishing works across the precinct will continue until early next year, including construction of the new 7-bay bus interchange, station facilities, car parking, forecourts, and landscaping.
