Works are full steam ahead in Truganina, with crews beginning to install L-shaped panels that will support the embankment of the new road bridge.
The level crossing at Hopkins Road is being removed via the building of a new bridge that will take vehicles over the rail line, improving safety and easing congestion.
Crews will lift a total of 23 L-shaped panels into place that will help form the retaining walls, with the panels inscribed with a striking grasslands design, reflecting the natural grassland environment surrounding Hopkins Road. The panels will eventually be painted in purple hues in a nod to the local wildflower.
The building of two bridge piers that will support the central span of the new road bridge is continuing. From Sunday 20 July to Wednesday 23 July crews will work in the rail corridor at night when no trains are running to complete bridge pier works.
The north and south abutment walls are now complete and 132,000 tonnes of soil has also been moved into place to build the road bridge embankments.
Over the coming months, crews will mark a new milestone with the lifting of the first bridge beams, as well as bridge deck works, and the installation of barriers and anti-throw screens.
The Hopkins Road level crossing will be gone for good and the new road bridge open in 2026.
Three more level crossings will be removed next year at nearby Coburns, Exford and Ferris roads, Melton. A new Melton Station will also open to passengers in 2026, two years ahead of schedule.
