Little builders get big smiles in Melton

A special community event brought construction to life for some of Melton’s youngest residents, with children from Great Beginnings Childcare getting a hands-on experience with the Melton level crossing removal project.

Great Beginnings Childcare, one of the closest neighbours to the Coburns Road boom gates, has had front-row seats to the transformation from day one. Staff say the children love watching the construction unfold, often pointing out diggers and cranes during playtime.

The event welcomed kinder groups to explore 3 exciting activity zones: a photo opportunity in a real digger, an art activity centre, and an outdoor toy digger and crane play area. Smiles lit up the playground as kids arrived to see the digger parked and ready for action.

Parents and staff were thrilled with the experience, noting how excited the children were to take part. “One of the highlights for the kids has been watching the construction work from their playground,” said a childcare educator. “To see it up close and be part of it was just amazing for them.”

Post-event, staff at Great Beginnings shared their appreciation, saying the children hadn’t stopped talking about their big day with the diggers.

We’re removing 4 dangerous and congested level crossings at Coburns Road, Exford Road and Ferris Road in Melton, and at Hopkins Road in Truganina, and building a new modern and accessible Melton Station which will open in 2026, 2 years ahead of schedule.
