Major works are ramping up in Altona to get rid of the Maidstone Street level crossing and build a new road bridge over the rail line, with crews set to work around the clock in November.
As part of a 3-day construction blitz, crews will work 24/7 in the rail corridor to install safety barriers, move boom gates, re-align traffic lanes, and prepare for piling works in December for the road bridge foundations.
Work will also continue on getting rid of the level crossings at Maddox and Champion roads in Newport during this time.
To allow these works to safely take place, buses will replace trains on sections of the Werribee Line from Thursday 13 November until last service, Sunday 16 November.
Maidstone Street will also be closed between Slough Road and north of the level crossing from 8pm, Thursday 13 November and 6am, Monday 17 November.
Heavy vehicles will be allowed through the level crossing during these works, while a temporary detour for all other vehicles will be in place via Civic Parade and Princes Freeway.
The intersection of Ajax Road and Maidstone Street will close from Thursday 13 November until mid 2027. A detour will be available for vehicles via Slough Road and a new temporary connection between Slough Road and Ajax Road.
When train services resume on Monday 17 November, trains will operate on a single track between Newport and Laverton stations until late April 2026 to keep the Werribee Line running during construction.
Trains to the city will not stop at Seaholme, Altona and Westona stations. A replacement bus will take passengers to Newport Station for a connecting train service. For more information on the Werribee Line timetable changes, visit Transport Victoria.
The Maidstone Street bridge will open to traffic in 2027, boosting safety and easing congestion by permanently separating trains and vehicles, and creating better connections, including to the new West Gate Tunnel.
Five level crossings are going for good in Melbourne’s inner west, at Altona, Newport, Spotswood and Yarraville, making the Werribee Line boom gate free by 2030.
