Piling is complete for the new road bridge in Altona, marking a significant milestone in works to remove the dangerous Maidstone Street level crossing.
A 140-tonne piling rig has drilled 23 holes up to 9m deep and 1.5m wide.
Each hole has now been filled with a reinforced steel cage and concrete, which will form part of the foundations for the new bridge.
To prepare for the bridge beams to be lifted in mid-2026, crews will continue relocating underground services and building the bridge foundations over the coming months.
Removing the Maidstone Street level crossing will create better connections for this growing industrial area and make travel safer for more than 14,400 vehicles that currently use the crossing each day, as well as for pedestrians and cyclists.
The dangerous and congested Maidstone Street level crossing will be gone for good in 2027, with the new bridge open to traffic, boosting safety and easing congestion by permanently separating trains and vehicles.
Works are also continuing to get rid of the nearby level crossings at Maddox and Champion roads in Newport, with the Werribee Line boom gate free by 2030.
