Construction is powering ahead to remove the dangerous Maidstone Street level crossing and build the new road bridge over the Werribee Line.
A 140-tonne piling rig has begun drilling 13 holes on the north side of the rail line, with a total of 23 piles needed to complete the foundations for the new bridge.
A crane is then used to lift a reinforced cage into each hole, measuring up to nine metres deep, which is then filled with concrete to form the pile.
Removing the level crossing by building a road bridge will avoid impacts to important utilities, with crews conducting extensive works over the last six months to carefully relocate a range of utilities ahead of major works.
Over the coming months, crews will continue relocating underground services and building the bridge foundations, getting ready to lift in the bridge beams.
The dangerous and congested Maidstone Street level crossing will be gone for good in 2027, with the new bridge open to traffic, boosting safety and easing congestion by permanently separating trains and vehicles.
Works are also continuing to get rid of the nearby level crossings at Maddox and Champion roads in Newport, with the Werribee Line boom gate free by 2030.
