Work to relocate major telecommunications lines and other utilities is getting underway at Sunshine Station, preparing the rail corridor for future trains to Melbourne Airport.
Melbourne Airport Rail Stage 1 will untangle 6kms of track between West Footscray and Albion and transform Sunshine into a transport superhub, with 2 new platforms and capacity for 1000 trains a day, including future airport trains and electric trains to Melton.
To create space for the new platforms, utilities adjacent to the rail corridor need to be relocated, including telecommunication lines underneath the station car park on Sun Crescent.
To allow crews to undertake this work safely, 65 car spaces at Sunshine Station will be closed from Monday 11 May until September, with crews setting up site fencing, lighting and a site compound ahead of the arrival of machinery to start the boring and relocation works.
There will also be disruptions at times at the laneway north of City Place and beside the Dickson Street bus interchange.
The utility works follow pipeline tunnel boring works underway at Albion Station car park to relocate a major jet fuel pipeline running between Albion and Sunshine.

Melbourne Airport Rail Stage 1 will be completed in 2030.
