Drivers in Melbourne are set to benefit from improved access and smoother journeys sooner, with major construction of the Thompsons Road and Berwick-Cranbourne Road Intersection Upgrade to be completed in October, 7 months ahead of schedule.
Crews are approaching their final push towards completion on the upgrade, which will see the existing congested roundabout in Clyde North replaced with an intersection with traffic lights, boasting new through and turning lanes and shared use paths around the intersection.
To fast-track construction and complete the upgrade sooner, the intersection will be closed from 5am Wednesday 1 July to 5am Monday 13 July 2026. During this time crews will install streetlights, traffic light poles, kerbs and guard rails, reinstate traffic islands, lay asphalt and realign safety barriers ready for the next stage of works.
Motorists are advised to plan ahead, allow up to 20 minutes extra travel time, follow signed detours and use alternative routes throughout the duration of the closure.

Once these works are complete, the intersection will reopen to traffic with Thompsons Road remaining closed in both directions between Berwick-Cranbourne Road and Matterhorn Drive until mid-September 2026 to facilitate the final stage of construction of the new intersection.
These important upgrades bring motorists 1 step closer to smoother, safer and more reliable journeys through Clyde North.
Big Build Roads is delivering the new intersection with traffic lights and has upgraded surrounding major roads in the area, including Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road, Thompsons Road, Western Port Highway, Hall Road, and Lathams Road.
Together, these projects are transforming Melbourne's rapidly growing south east, creating better road connections and faster travel times to residential communities, industrial areas, education facilities and health precincts.
