People in Melbourne's west are now enjoying safer and more reliable journeys, with the opening of the new Point Cook Road and Central Avenue intersection in Altona Meadows.
The new intersection with traffic lights marks one of the biggest milestones on the Point Cook Road and Central Avenue Intersection Upgrade and paves the way for major construction to be completed by December 2026, 6 months ahead of schedule.
The former roundabout has been transformed into a modern signalised intersection featuring additional traffic lanes, a new freeway exit ramp connection and pedestrian-operated traffic lights, improving safety and traffic flow for the thousands of motorists who travel through the area every day.
Pedestrians can safely cross the intersection using permanent dedicated push-button crossings, a key improvement identified by the community during consultation.
Feedback highlighted strong support for upgraded pedestrian connections and safer crossing opportunities at the busy intersection.
The upgraded intersection will improve access between Altona Meadows, Seabrook, Point Cook and the Princes Freeway, helping people travel more easily to local schools, public transport shops, sporting facilities and employment areas, while supporting continued growth in Melbourne's west.
Crews will continue finishing works into early 2027, including landscaping and other site activities.
Temporary traffic changes and disruptions will remain in place while finishing works are completed safely. This includes closing the existing freeway exit ramp onto Central Avenue between 13 September and mid-November 2026. Vehicles will still be able to exit the Princes Freeway at Point Cook Road by using the newly built exit loop ramp with detours in place.
The Point Cook Road and Central Avenue Intersection Upgrade is part of the Victorian Government's investment in improving safety, easing congestion and supporting Melbourne's growing western suburbs.
This project builds on jointly funded upgrades across Melbourne’s west, including the Princes Freeway and Werribee Main Road Intersection Upgrade and additional lanes on Central Avenue between Lunn Court and Skehan Boulevard in Altona Meadows.
Together with the West Gate Tunnel now open, these projects are transforming travel across Melbourne’s west – improving safety, easing congestion and providing better connections for growing communities.
In Wyndham Vale, major works are also underway on the Ballan Road Intersection Upgrade, which will replace the existing roundabout with traffic lights, deliver new lanes and safer pedestrian crossings, and improve connections for local buses, cyclists and drivers.
With the upgraded Point Cook Road and Central Avenue intersection now open, motorists and the local community will benefit from improved traffic flow, safer crossings and more reliable connections through this busy part of Altona Meadows.
