The new Dixon Veloway is now open for cyclists’ exclusive use.
The veloway is a Victorian first – a dedicated, elevated cycling path that will create safer and quicker journeys for the growing number of cyclists in Melbourne’s west travelling to and from the city.
Named after the late Iris Dixon, Dixon was a pioneer in Australian women’s cycling. With an accomplished career including 16 national championships and 25 Victorian titles in road and track cycling, Dixon was a legacy as a champion for women in sport.
Suspended between the new elevated roadway along Footscray Road, the bright-green 2.5-kilometre path runs from Shepherd Bridge in Footscray to the city side of Moonee Ponds Creek, linking into the Federation Trail.
As a massive investment in cycling infrastructure, the veloway creates a dedicated path built for bikes - completely separating riders from traffic and avoiding six road crossings at intersections.
It will offer a safe and modern ride at four metres wide, with 24/7 CCTV monitoring, emergency vehicle access, alarmed exits and extensive lighting.
