Scope settled

We’ve finalised the design for the Ballan Road Intersection Upgrade. Key features include:

replacing the congested roundabout at Ballan Road, Greens Road, and McGrath Road north with a new traffic light intersection, adding extra lanes through the intersection to improve travel time and journey reliability
adding new traffic lights at McGrath Road south near the 7-Eleven, making it safer and easier to turn right towards Werribee
providing dedicated pedestrian crossings and shared walking and cycling paths, making it easier to move between homes, services, schools, and businesses
introducing a new bus priority lane on Ballan Road to improve public transport reliability.

Major works – Barrier installation night works

Since January, we’ve been working behind safety barriers to build the northern half of the new intersection. This has allowed traffic to keep flowing on Ballan Road while construction continues.

To keep building the intersection towards Werribee, we’ll close the Ballan Road driveway to the shops.

The Ballan Road driveway to the shop will be closed from 5am Friday 27 March until late 2026.

At the same time, the McGrath Road north shop driveway will re-open. To visit the eateries, fill up at the BP, or wash your car or dog, please enter via McGrath Road north until later in 2026.

McGrath Road north will remain closed at Ballan Road until late 2026. This update affects shop access only.

What we’re doing and when

To do these works, we’ll install safety barriers at the Ballan Road driveway during night works on Thursday 26 March.

To safely install the barriers overnight, we’ll temporarily close the following roads from 9pm Thursday 26 March to 5am Friday 27 March:

McGrath Road south at Ballan Road
Ballan Road between the roundabout and Kimberley Road.

The following detours will be in place:

Eastbound: via Ballan, Bolton and Heaths roads and Greaves Street north
Westbound: via Ballan, Hooker, Rowes and Bolton roads
Local access: Cambridge Crescent and Honour Avenue.

Please allow an additional 10 minutes of travel time during these overnight works. Access to homes will be maintained via detours and traffic controller assistance.

Access the BP and shops by using the McGrath Road north driveway via detours. Please see night works map below.

Works are subject to weather. If we need to reschedule, we’ll share updates via SMS and on-road signage.

Local shops – change to access until late 2026

Access to local shops will be maintained during major works. Please continue to visit or order from your local shops as works progress.

By car:

From 5am, Friday 27 March, we’ll reopen the McGrath Road north driveway to the eateries, car and dog wash, and BP, and close the Ballan Road shop access.

During this time, vehicles won’t be able to enter the shops from Ballan Road. Please enter via McGrath Road north from Heaths or Bolton roads.

On foot:

We’ll relocate the temporary push-button pedestrian lights further east on Ballan Road. We’ll also reopen the footpath from the Werribee Open Space and floodway to the KFC.

The footpath on McGrath Road north to the shops remains open.

Pedestrian detours and signage will be in place to guide you through the area.

Walking to school safely during road works

We have installed 2 temporary push button pedestrian crossings around the works area.

To help students walk to school safely, 2 recommended routes are shown on the map below.

Families west of McGrath Road north (purple area): Follow the pedestrian detour on Ballan Road service road. Use the relocated school crossing. Follow signs to safely cross Greens Road.
Families east of McGrath Road north (blue area): Walk through the Werribee Open Space and Floodway path. Continue to Ballan Road underpass. Follow detour signs.

Pedestrians – Detours from 5am Friday 27 March until late 2026

Until late 2026, we’ll close footpaths and pedestrian crossings to keep you safe during our works. These include paths near the McGrath, Greens and Ballan roads roundabout.

A pedestrian detour around the work site, and a temporary signalised pedestrian crossing to shops, is in place. Please follow detour signs to travel around the area safely and allow extra time. Cyclists can use shared use paths on Heaths Road and Werribee Open Space and Flood Way.

Public transport – bus stop closures from January 2026

Bus route 190 will have two stops closed long-term. These stops are located at Ballan Road/Whiton Grove.

Alternate bus stops are located near Ballan Road/Buckingham Drive or the Ballan Road/Bolton Road intersection. You are advised to check the PTV website at www.ptv.vic.gov.au for the latest information, bus stop closures and detour routes.

Major works underway

From 5am, Monday 19 January until late 2026, we’ll close McGrath Road north at Ballan Road to build half of the new intersection.

Building the intersection in halves enables us to keep traffic flowing on Ballan Road for the majority of construction.

During this time, vehicles will not be able to enter McGrath Road north from Ballan Road or exit from McGrath Road north onto Ballan Road.

Access to homes will be maintained by Ballan, Bolton and McGrath north roads.

Access to shops will be maintained by Ballan Road. There will be detours in place for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles to help you move around the area.

Works are subject to weather conditions. We will provide updated information via SMS and on-road signage if we need to reschedule.

How will this work affect you?

You may notice an increase in noise, dust and vibration at times from our construction equipment and vehicles. We’ll monitor impacts and do our best to keep them to a minimum.

From 5am, Monday 19 January until late 2026, McGrath Road north will be closed at the Ballan Road roundabout.

Detours will be in place via Ballan and Bolton roads. Delays of up to 20 minutes are expected. Please plan ahead.

From early February, drivers will begin using the temporary roundabout that we’ve built. From this time:

There will be no right turn from McGrath Road south onto Ballan Road towards Werribee: Turn left onto Ballan Road from McGrath Road south, then use the temporary roundabout to turn back towards Werribee. See the detour map below for details.

As part of these works, the access from Ballan Road to the Ballan Road service road for Windsor Avenue will be closed. A new access point to the Ballan Road service road from Ballan Road will be built 50 metres away from the existing access, as part of the final design. While we build the new access point to the Ballan Road service road, residents should use side streets via Bolton Road and the McGrath Road service road to reach their properties.

Pedestrian detours

In mid-January, the way you move through the area on foot will change. We’ll close the existing pedestrian crossings on Ballan Road near the roundabout for the duration of these works.

From Monday, 2 February, you’ll be able to use new temporary push-button pedestrian lights near the medical centre to cross Ballan Road. Please allow extra walking time and follow detour signage to help you get to where you need to go.

We’ll install pedestrian detours and signage to guide you through the area. For added safety, the school crossing on Ballan Road will be relocated about 300 metres away from the roundabout and our works.

Local shops – change to access

Access to local shops will be maintained during major works. We will keep you updated on changes to access during construction. Please continue to visit or get delivery from your local shops as works progress.

From Monday 19 January until later in 2026, you’ll only be able to access the eateries, car wash and BP from Ballan Road.

From early February, we’ll remove the right turn into the shops on both the north and south sides of Ballan Road:

If you’re coming from Werribee: Use the temporary roundabout to turn back, then turn left into the entry for the eateries, car wash and BP.
If you’re coming from Manor Lakes: Turn right into McGrath Road south to access the entry for the medical clinic, pharmacy, 7Eleven, and Ultra Tune.
