Ison Road overpass and extension now open
The Ison Road overpass and extension is now open to traffic – three months ahead of schedule.
With the new road open, the Level Crossing Removal Project team has now permanently closed Galvin Road at the level crossing. Road users will now need to use the Ison Road overpass to travel above the rail line.
Big Build Roads is working with the Department of Transport and Planning to monitor movement through the Ison Road overpass and extension and adjust traffic light timing where possible to keep traffic moving.
This is an important new addition to the road network, and we thank drivers for their patience during this time. Like any new project, it takes time to adjust traffic light timings to best balance all movements.
The Ison Road Project is part of a broader program of road improvements in Melbourne's west. The Princes Freeway and Werribee Main Road Interchange Upgrade will build on the benefits already delivered through the Ison Road Project by providing additional capacity to the interchange and freeway ramps. This will improve traffic flow along Ison Road, Werribee Main Road and the Princes Freeway.
Several benefits from the Princes Freeway and Werribee Main Road Interchange Upgrade have been delivered early through the Ison Road Project, including an upgraded intersection with traffic lights at Ison Road, Geelong Road and Werribee Main Road and a new roundabout linking the Princes Freeway city-bound off-ramp to Wests Road, Geelong Road and Maltby Bypass Service Centre improving traffic flow.
