What’s happening

Since our last update, we’ve:

finished upgrading the intersection at Dellamore Boulevard
finished building the new eastbound lanes on Somerton Road near Mickleham Road, and shifted traffic onto the new lanes
finished sections of the new walking and cycling path on Somerton Road near Mickleham Road
finished relocating gas services between Hillview Road and Dellamore Boulevard
opened the new connection between Horizon Boulevard and Montenegro Road
started drainage works at Hillview Road, in preparation for intersection upgrade works
started building the new westbound lanes on Somerton Road at the intersection of Mickleham Road.

Current and upcoming disruptions

Blossom Drive temporary closure at Somerton Road

We're upgrading the intersection at Blossom Drive and Somerton Road to improve safety and traffic flow.

To complete works safely, we'll temporarily close Blossom Drive at Somerton Road from Monday 23 September to late October 2024.

There will be detour via Lemonwood Drive and Mickleham Road.

Delays of up to 15 minutes are expected.

Please plan ahead, allow extra travel time and follow signed detours. We've scheduled this closure to start in the school holidays, when traffic volumes are lower.

There will no impact to bus services or bin collection during the works.

Blossom Drive closure 23 September to late October 2024

Permanent access changes to Somerton Road from Blossom Drive

From late October 2024, there’ll be permanent changes to the way you access Somerton Road from Blossom Drive:

Left turns in and out of Blossom Drive will remain, however the right turn movement from Blossom Drive onto Somerton Road will be restricted.
To head west on Somerton Road from Blossom Drive, you’ll need to turn left onto Somerton Road and do a U-turn at the Mickleham Road intersection.

You’ll still be able to turn right onto Blossom Drive from Somerton Road.

Mickleham and Somerton roads - Safety improvements for temporary roundabout

The roundabout at Mickleham and Somerton Roads will be reduced to 1 lane at the east and westbound approaches until late 2024, so we can safely continue works at the intersection.

There will be ongoing changes at this intersection until the project is complete.

The new traffic lights at Mickleham and Somerton roads will improve safety and traffic flow, getting you home sooner and safer.

Works will take place from 7am to 7pm, Monday to Sunday, however some works may need to take place at night to minimise impacts on traffic during the day.

Once these works are complete, the temporary roundabout will be returned to its original position at the centre of the intersection.

What to expect

Changed traffic conditions

There are changed traffic conditions including reduced speed limits, lane closures and temporary traffic barriers, traffic lights and temporary line marking on Mickleham and Somerton roads while works take place.

Temporary footpath closures and detours are also in place while we relocate services and build new lanes on Mickleham Road.

Reduced speed limit along sections of Mickleham Road

The speed limit has been reduced to 40km/h between Somerton Road and Dellamore Boulevard while we’re working. Temporary speed reductions will be in place at all other times until the project is complete in early 2025 .

We’ve reduced the speed limit because even when we’re not working, there are still risks when driving near a construction site. Research shows that the fatality rate reduces considerably when speeds are reduced. These changes on Mickleham Road are all about getting you and our workers home safe.

Construction impacts

Our construction activities may generate low to medium levels of noise, dust, and vibration at times. We’ll be monitoring impacts to ensure they’re kept to a minimum. Most of these works will take place between 7am and 6pm, Monday to Friday and 7am to 1pm, Saturdays. At times we’ll need to work outside of these hours to minimise impacts on traffic during the day. The progress of these works will depend on weather and ground conditions.
