What’s happening
Recently, we’ve:
- opened all new lanes on Mickleham Road, with 3 lanes now in each direction between Somerton Road and Dellamore Boulevard
- installed the new traffic lights at the intersection of Mickleham and Somerton roads, replacing the roundabout
- finished intersection upgrade works at Hillview and Somerton roads.
All lanes now open on Mickleham Road
We've achieved a major project milestone, with all new lanes on the Mickleham Road Upgrade - Stage 1 completed!
There are now 3 lanes of traffic in each direction on Mickleham Road between Somerton Road and Dellamore Boulevard, and multiple lanes in each direction on Somerton Road between Blossom Drive and French Road.
There are also extra turning lanes and slip lanes at the intersection of Mickleham and Somerton roads, where traffic lights have replaced the old roundabout.
The new shared walking and cycling paths are also now open, improving connections to local shopping centres, schools and other amenities.
Major construction on the Mickleham Road Upgrade - Stage 1 is now complete. There will be some minor finishing works taking place early next year, such as landscaping and lighting works. We'll need temporary lane closures and reduced speeds to keep you and our workers safe during these works.
We thank you for your patience during construction, and we hope that you enjoy safer, more reliable journeys.
New traffic lights installed at Mickleham and Somerton roads
We’ve removed the roundabout at Mickleham and Somerton roads and replaced it with a new, safer intersection complete with traffic lights.
The traffic lights will improve safety and help reduce congestion in the area by better managing traffic flow.
Traffic signals can also be adjusted remotely in real time, to ensure that traffic flow is maximised and in response to current traffic conditions.
The upgraded pedestrian crossings at the intersection will also make it safer and easier for you to move around the area.
Even though the intersection is now fully open to traffic, we’ll need to continue doing some minor finishing works to ensure road users get the full benefit from the work that’s been done.
Permanent access changes to Somerton Road from Blossom Drive
From late October 2024, there’ll be permanent changes to the way you access Somerton Road from Blossom Drive:
- Left turns in and out of Blossom Drive will remain, however the right turn movement from Blossom Drive onto Somerton Road will be restricted.
- To head west on Somerton Road from Blossom Drive, you’ll need to turn left onto Somerton Road and do a U-turn at the Mickleham Road intersection.
You’ll still be able to turn right onto Blossom Drive from Somerton Road.

What to expect
Changed traffic conditions
There are changed traffic conditions including reduced speed limits, lane closures and temporary traffic barriers, traffic lights and temporary line marking on Mickleham and Somerton roads while works take place.
Temporary footpath closures and detours are also in place while we relocate services and build new lanes on Mickleham Road.
Construction impacts
Our construction activities may generate low to medium levels of noise, dust, and vibration at times. We’ll be monitoring impacts to ensure they’re kept to a minimum. Most of these works will take place between 7am and 6pm, Monday to Friday and 7am to 1pm, Saturdays. At times we’ll need to work outside of these hours to minimise impacts on traffic during the day. The progress of these works will depend on weather and ground conditions.
